Mayor Rees has been active in the city's community throughout his entire life. Prior to his first run as mayor of Bristol in 2012, Marvin Rees worked as a freelance journalist and presenter at BBC Radio Bristol and Ujima Radio and acted as the programme manager for race equality in mental health issues at Public Health, Bristol. His first bid for the mayoral post was unsuccessful but in 2016, he won a majority of the vote, becoming the first black mayor of African descent in the UK.
