Lithuania is taking a big step towards becoming climate neutral. The country’s government announced a massive increase to the budget aimed at developing its solar power generation. 6 million euros was the amount of funding allocated for this purpose in 2019 – however the planned threefold boost will increase the solar power budget to around 18 million euros. The government envisions the construction of solar power plants near the following Lithuanian cities – Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, Šiauliai, Panevėžys and Alytus. Citizens in the surrounding regions will be able to substantially benefit from the new environmentally friendly government initiative.

The government’s plan of course also somewhat relies on citizens being active. If locals want their households to become green, energy from the newly constructed solar power plants will be up for sale. A website will be launched at the start of October, where citizens will be able to buy energy according to their specific needs. In the application forms, Lithuanians will be able to select how much power they need, how much power they currently consume and finally order the right amount of energy. Subsequently, they will be able to keep buying power straight through the website. This way, citizens will not be experiencing any administrative burdens -everything will be getting done remotely – fast, simple and most importantly – environmentally friendly.
