People with a musical talent or those who would like to find out if they even have the makings of a genius are welcome to try the new services at the music department of the Tallinn Central Library. The municipal website of the Estonian capital informed that aside from traditional instruments, visitors can try their hand at making music on a digital program.

Music composition classes for beginners

The municipal library wants to make access to music, and access to creating music much easier. To that end, residents will be able to use professional music-making equipment free of charge.

Cubase LE AI Elements 10.5 is a software which can be used to create, mix and edit tracks even the user does not have a prior musical education. All that is needed is some basic computer skills.

The program is popular with beginners, amateur and professional composers. It has a large database of music materials, sounds, samples and instruments in different keys and styles. It comes with pre-recorded drum parts but those who are able can also use the MIDI keyboard M-AUDIO Oxygen49. Complete beginners can request tutorials from the librarians or follow a special guide.

Another software that is available to composers is FINALE notation program, which can be described as a word processor for sheet music. Users can create or transpose notational sheets and notes into a digital format. The program can then reproduce what is written and create audio files, so composers can quickly hear and edit their creations.

This is only the latest among a range of services offered by the music department of the library which aim to make music creation more accessible and affordable. Library users can also play piano and drums on the site, as well as borrow a range of musical instruments to take home the way they would borrow books.

Time slots for using the music creation software, piano and drums can be booked by e-mail at music@tln.lib.ee or by phone at 683 1912.
