The recovery of the old tobacco company of Los Remedios, closed since January 2008 and owned by the multinational Altadis, is very soon to be undertaken following an agreement between the City Council and the US firm on the protection of the site after the modification of the General Urban Plan (PGOU). The latter shall change the current rating of the complex (singular industry) to enable a tertiary use and including building equipment, reports ABC de Sevilla. That level of protection is indicated in a report by the Andalusia Heritage Institute (IAPH) of the Ministry of Culture. The public body has ruled that almost 90% of the factory complex should be protected and that it allows new constructions in the south zone of the enclosure, being able to tear down for this purpose a pair of the buildings of that area of the factory which are of lower patrimonial value. And it has given green light, in addition, to the opening of the complex to the Guadalquivir River, one of the requirements that the City Council had put on the table and that will be an essential condition for the urban initiative that will be developed to obtain municipal support and licenses.
The agreement states that access to the promenade and the ground plane will be guaranteed. In addition possible installations or lifts will be admitted that enable the use and enjoyment of the roofs as observatory of the historic dock and the city, with a material treatment not foreign to that of the industrial facility. What is more, the river walk will be reinvented as a new public space.
From the local government of the Socialist Juan Espadas hopes that before the end of the mandate this spring the agreement should be concluded. The City Council now intends to win the section of the Guadalquivir that occupies the old tobacco factory of Altadis, which covers a good part of the riverbank between the bridges of San Telmo and Los Remedios district.
