Special school Ayios Spyridonas in Larnaca for children with special needs, is launching an initiative in September which aims to put an end to the use of plastic straws in Larnaca. The Municipality of Larnaca embraced and supported from the very beginning the efforts of the Volunteer Committee of the Special School in Larnaca, adding that the effort taken by the children together and their teachers is highly praisable and the Municipality of Larnaca is supportive.

The initiative "Larnaca puts an end to the plastic straw" aims to increase awareness in the local community about environmental pollution, highlight the voluntary work by children with special needs, inspire such actions, develop cooperation between organized groups and promote Larnaca as the first town in Cyprus to adopt this good practice. According to the mayor of Larnaca Andreas Vyras, the municipality won’t stop with only implementing environmental tax on plastic bags, but will focus on replacing plastic straws with products which are more environmentally friendly.
