Paris is now accepting applications to its Youth Council. Everyone aged between 15 and 30 years who lives, studies or has regular activities in the French capital can apply and become one of 100 youth councillors.
The Youth Council of Paris was created back in 2003 as a democratic consultative body allowing for young people to get involved in the city's life and the decisions that concern them. It is composed of 50 young women and 50 young men, with parts of the membership getting renewed annually. Its term is of 2 years.
Tasks and Mission of the Council
Every year the Mayor of Paris calls for the council to work on several ongoing projects alongside the Municipality. They could be related to cleanliness, modernisation of municipal libraries system, local heritage, climate, circular economy or many similar areas. The council submits recommendations which are regularly taken into account by the local council and the respective deputy-mayors.
Furthermore, among the continuous work of the Council, as stated by the letter, are activities related to welcoming new students in Paris and of course – to the youth projects and policies.
Finally, in the Mission letter for the 2018-2020 Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo expressed her gratitude for the work of the council and the important achievements of the past. Regarding the future, she shared her willingness for the Council to participate in the organisation of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic games. Also, she invited young people to contribute to undertaking concrete actions against the isolation of the elderly.
It should be noted, however, that regular participation in the meetings of the council is required. As they mainly take place at the City Hall of Paris in the evenings after 18:30 or on weekdays, this can prove particularly challenging for some.
If you think you match the profile needed and are motivated to contribute to your city’s development, apply now. The applications are accepted online between 22 September and midnight on 22 October at this link.
