Slovakia is proud of its rich folklore and folk traditions. Each region, city, and municipality has a unique character and folklore. The former mining town Banská Štiavnica is one of the most beautiful and in historical terms one of the most interesting towns in Slovakia. Because of its rich history, Banská Štiavnica is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
By becoming a tourist attraction, the mining town has turned away from its citizens. Striving to restore the relationship between local government and citizens, Banská Štiavnica applied for a call and became the first Slovak City of Culture. Together with the new title the city will receive 300 000 Euros from the Slovak Arts Council. The town's opening program, titled Family Silver, reflects the idea that will accompany the city of culture throughout the year.
