Want to participate in a Chinese tea ceremony? Make your own Chinese puppet? Try some square dancing or wonder at Chinese art? If you happen to be in the Irish capital city sometime between January 24th and February 10th, then the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival 2020 is just for you.
The Dublin Chinese New Year Festival is an initiative of Dublin City Council. The 2020 event will be dedicated to The Year of the Rat, an animal that is a symbol of wealth, fertility and the beginning of a new day for the Chinese.
On Wednesday, organizers announced full details of the Festival programme, which is jam-packed with talks, visual arts, performance, film, music, cuisine and many family friendly and free events.
The centrepiece of the Festival will be the Spring Festival Fair (Sat 25th 11am-6pm & Sun 26th Jan, 11am-5pm, Free entry) which will be arranged at Dublin’s iconic Fruit and Vegetable Market on Mary Street. It will be styled after traditional Chinese temple fairs and will feature workshops, performances, food stalls, demos and many more.
Many buildings and landmarks across Dublin and Kildare will light up in red to welcome the Chinese New Year. Thus, for the fifth consecutive year, Dublin City will return the favour of Chinese authorities who illuminate The Great Wall of China in green for St Patrick’s Day.
Those eager to find out what Chinese square dancing is all about, can give it a try for free at Wolfe Tone Square (1st Feb 2pm-4pm).
Lord Mayor of Dublin Paul Mc Auliffe said on the occasion: “Dublin Chinese New Year Festival has been a wonderful addition to Dublin’s cultural calendar since its founding in 2008. This year’s programme is one of the strongest to date, with a jam-packed schedule of exciting events set to take place across the city.”
