For years it’s been illegal to use a mobile whilst driving a car, now, this law will be extended to any drivers of any kind of vehicle in the Netherlands. Cyclists caught using a mobile electronic device in without a hands-free will face a fine of 95 Euros. The law will enter into force on July 1, 2019.
The ban is a result of the high number of bicycle accidents (the number of cyclists involved in fatal traffic accidents has exceeded the number of motorists). Experts estimate that the use of mobile phones is the cause of every fourth bicycle accident. It’s not just smartphone use that will be banned, but the use of any kind of mobile electronic device whilst cycling, such as tablets or cameras. Using the term “mobile electronic device” allows for future technological developments to be taken into account too.
