The Daugavpils municipal website reported yesterday that a new polyurethane coating will be applied to the roofs of the city’s aging residential infrastructure. Work on applying the new material will begin in August.

Polyurethane roofing is supposed to be cheaper and faster to apply

Following the example of other Latvian cities, such as Riga, Jekabpils and Rezekne, authorities in Daugavpils have decided that it would be beneficial to turn to polyurethane material as an alternative solution for roofing problems. The municipal housing and utilities company DDzKSU has been receiving an increasing number of complaints from residents regarding roof issues.

To that end, DDzKSU is preparing the material that will be first applied on a residential flat building located on Lielā Dārza Street, 3. First, the top of the building will be cleaned and primed, after which it will be covered with multiple layers of polyurethane.

Why was this material chosen? Residential flat complexes are conventionally covered with bitumen (also known as asphalt or Ruberoid) roofing. This is done with the intention to provide protection against the eroding exposure of the sun and different forces of nature, especially rain and snow.

One of the polyurethane advantages is that it can be applied much faster – it only takes about 6 weeks to do so. Another advantage is the quicker administrative procedure, as applying it does not need to be listed as a separate project which would need to wait for approval.

And last but not least, the cost is three times lower than that of bitumen felt roofing. As for the quality, there is long-term warranty of 25 years.

DDzKSU specialists have already completed training in the application of polyurethane and can begin work in coating the roofs next month.
