The Royal Palace of Madrid was inaugurated in 1764, according to the will of Philip V the first Bourbon king of Spain. It was constructed in the place where the Habsburgs used to reside - the Palace of Alcazar, destroyed by fire 30 years earlier. The splendid design and architecture are testimony to prestige and luxury and derive their beauty from the mastery of the best European architect Filippo Juvarra and several prominent planners and painters who adjusted or changed completely parts of his original work.
Today, apart from representing a spectacular tourist attraction, the palace continues to serve its original protocol function, by being the official residence and place for ceremonies to Their Majesties King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. More than 25 different objects and sections are to be seen by curious visitors, among which the Throne room. This is probably the most important representative and richly decorated place in the whole palace. Reserved for the highest state ceremonies, such as the starting of the military year (Pascua Militar), the yearly reception of the diplomatic corps, or national feasts. The Greatness of the Spanish Monarchy, famous fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, silver and rock crystal Venetian chandeliers and rich draperies will be your company.
It is worth mentioning the Crown room, where symbols like royal sceptre, crown and Proclamation of His Majesty King Felipe VI can be found, as well as the Hall of columns, home to XVIth century bronze sculptures from the Seven Planets series. Finally, do not fail to visit the vast space dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
