The second largest city of Luxembourg welcomes a unique art exhibition for the summer period. CULTURE.S, the 2019 edition of the ephemeral garden with living sculptures was inaugurated in Esch sur Alzette on the City Hall square on July 26th. This ephemeral garden is the result of a collaboration between the City of Esch's Green Spaces department and the Luxembourgish artist Florence Hoffmann. This kind of collaboration is the first of its kind on the territory of the City of Esch.
The installation CULTURE.S is composed of five large-sized books placed vertically as monolith blocks. Books are regarded as symbol of knowledge, education, culture particularly in the digital age. Each book, instead of a title, bears a single word - universal values of human heritage, such as freedom, unity, solidarity, tolerance, well-being. What is more, each of them represents a mini horizontal garden, prepared together with city gardeners. The installation can be seen by the autumn of 2019.
Books are a recurrent motive in the art of Florence Hoffman. She has numerous works on display around other European cities and they generally convey powerful social messages. To find an overview her pieces of art, follow the link to Florence Hoffmann's webpage.
