The European Week for Waste Reduction started as a project co-funded by the EU LIFE+ programme for the period 2009-2012, by five partners. Since the end of the project lifetime, the one week event takes place yearly, based on the original conception. There are 14 347 actions taking place around Europe in 2018.
The EWWR aims to raise awareness about sustainable resource and waste management, to encourage a wide range of audiences (public authorities, private companies, civil society as well as citizens) to take active part in the process. Among others, the European Week for Waste Reduction wants to mobilize and encourage European citizens to concentrate on four key action themes:
- Reduce - Strict avoidance and reduction at source
- Reuse - Preparing for reuse and reuse
- Recycle - Waste sorting and recycling
- Let’s Clean Up Europe! - European Clean-Up Day
A few takeaway tips for everyday waste reduction: borrow or hire tools instead of buying new, repair instead of throwing away, donate your old clothing to increase its life.
