Yesterday, the Regional Government of Galicia announced on their website that it has organized free trips for selected families consisting of single mothers and their children. Between 31 August and 6 September, the families will get the chance to visit a Galician province that is different from the one they normally reside in.

Social policies that emphasize the importance of vacations on well-being

The free vacation trips will benefit 74 persons in total including moms and their kids. Some of the women who were chosen, apart from having sole responsibility for their children, had also been victims of domestic abuse.

As for the vacation activities, those are planned to include excursions and fun activities under the guidance of monitors.

Naturally, in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, the necessary precautions will be taken. These will include the disinfection of the transportation vehicles and the provision of activities which allow for enough free space for the activities to take place. Additionally, each group of excursionists will count with no more than 15 persons and the monitors will be trained to be knowledgeable in the application of precautionary measures.

The Regional Secretariat of Equality, which is in charge of this program, has made sure that all expenses have been taken care of so that families can focus on enjoying their free time. These include the provision of lodgings, meals, transportation, teams of monitors and a program of leisure activities.

For the next time these kinds of outings get organized, the authorities remind that applicants should be single women taking care of children aged 2-12. Additionally, the mothers’ income for the past six months should not exceed the IPREM limit (the Spanish reference indicator determining social benefits) by a factor of 1.5.
