According to Amsterdam municipality, there are too many young people who cannot afford renting a room in the capital. The city has increased the number of rooms set aside for students and young people by over 11 000 over the past four years but high prices and shortages continue to be a major problem.
By 2022, 10 500 homes and rooms will be built for students and young people in Amsterdam and the surrounding region - 9 thousand in Amsterdam and 1500 in the surrounding municipalities. Because the municipality owns the land being built on, prices will be controlled - those aged between 18 and 24 will pay a maximum rent of 424 Euros per month, and 23 to 28-year-olds will pay up to 607 Euros each month.
The homes will be a combination of permanent and temporary, some with shared facilities, and service costs will be kept at an acceptable level.
