One and a half months, 4.5 tonnes of paint: this is all it takes to turn a grey boring communal facility into a piece of art. And, creativity and artistic spirit, of course. The water tower of the Hungarian city of Gyor has been transformed completely as part of a contemporary art project, under the program of International Festival of Artists of Gyor celebrating the 50th anniversary of its establishment. The design was consulted by Dóra Maurer Kossuth- winning graphic artist and painter, representative of the new Hungarian avant-garde fine art. The painter Bertalan Varga designed and supervised workmanship.
The 4700 metres of steel now shine in bright colours and correspond perfectly with the image of Gyor as European Capital of Culture, a title officially entering into force in 2023. Therefore, refurbishment and redesign of industrial spaces was highly necessary. According to Vice-mayor Ákos Radnóti, the facility might be illuminated in the future, as well. The new attractive vision and the positive vibes put aside, the tower has an essential role for supplying the housing estates with a capacity of storing a total of 6000 cubic meters of water.
