The date of the third call of the European Commission WiFi4EU voucher initiative has been announced - 19 September 2019 at 13:00 CEST. The call budget this time will be 26.7 million euros. The European Commission will distribute 1,780 vouchers across European municipalities. The main princip is the same - first come, first served basis. The call will be open until 17:00 CEST on 20 September 2019.
The European municipalities first need to be regisretad on the WiFi4EU Portal before becoming eligible to apply for the 15,000 euros vouchers. The voucher will allow the winning municipality to set up free Wi-Fi networks in public spaces.
The European Commission informed that the first WiFi4EU call, which took place in November 2018, was hugely successful, with over 13,000 municipalities applying from all across Europe, and 2,800 vouchers awarded. This was followed up with a second call in April 2019, which saw more than 10,000 applications for 3,400 vouchers. Almost 100% of these vouchers were claimed within the first first minute of the call launch, highlighting the receptiveness of the municipalities to the first come, first-served nature of the call.
