Limassol designated as a European city of sport for 2020
Mayor Nicolaides and his team will attend the official award ceremony on 10 December at the European Parliament

The Cypriot Municipality Limassol was officially named European city of sport for 2020. The recognition comes from ACES Europe – the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation. The title is awarded to a municipality that has an official population ranging between 25,000 and 499,999 inhabitants.
The winning municipality is chosen according to its adherence to the principles of responsibility and ethics, its awareness to the fact that sport is a key factor for aggregation of the society, its efforts in improving the quality of life and the psycho-physical well-being of its citizens and its achievements in completing the integration of different social classes in the community.
ACES Europe is a sports organisation based in Brussels and annually bestows its recognition to different European towns since 2001. ACES Europe is also an official partner of the European Commission in the organization of the European Week of Sport.
The President of ACES Europe Gian Francesco Lupattelli has sent a letter to Nicos Nicolaides, Mayor of Limassol informing him about the good news. In the letter, Lupattelli congratulated the municipality for organising a big variety of sport events and promoting sports tourism.
Limassol will create new sports facilities and upgrade the old ones
Joyful for the recognition, Mayor Nicolaides stated that “It was an aim of the municipality to claim the important title of the European city of Sport and its attainment will constitute the beginning of an essential upgrading of sports facilities in different areas of our town”.
The mayor also brought attention to the long-term goals of Limassol to create new sport facilities and to upgrade the old ones. The municipality is also planning to establish sports facilities near the coastal area, aiming to host international events.
Mayor Nicolaides and his team will attend the official award ceremony for the title on 10 December at the European Parliament in Brussels. At the event, more than 30 awards will handed out - all of them going to Capitals, Cities, Communities, Islands, Towns, Resorts and Companies.
