Životopis

História mesta

For centuries, Thracians, Slavs and Bulgarians lived along this coast of the Danube River, creating their own way of life and culture. A Thracian settlement existed here in the first millennium BC, and discovered tombstones from that time testify to it. Later the great Roman Danube road ran across these lands. This is evidenced by the remains of the Roman castles Magura piatra (or Reganum), Camistrum and Augusta. In this region, there are three historic trenches, which were later called Lomski, Ostrovski and Kozlodujski, where a military garrison of Bulgarian ruler Khan Asparukh was placed. The first known written record of the existence of a village with a similar name in Nikopol's sanjak is given in a "Ijmal" register of the 15th century.

In the 18th century, the settlement was named as Kotozluk and Kozludere (a low coomb) and later Kozloduy (an angle of ice blocks).

Hristo Botev's detachment landed at Kozloduy on the Radetski steamer on 17 May 1876. The 8th cavalry regiment under Commander Alexandru Perets liberated Kozloduy from the Ottomans on 23 November 1877. This cavalry was part of the Romanian Forces under the command of the Russian Imperial Army. The construction of the first Nuclear Electric Power Station in Bulgaria, located in Kozloduy, started on 6 April 1970.
