DiscoverEU’s first application round opens to 18-year-olds on Thursday, 7 April
18-year-olds who wish to explore Europe will soon have the chance to do so thanks to the European Commission’s DiscoverEU initiative. More specifically, young people living in Erasmus+ programme countries and born between 1 July 2003 and 30 June 2004 can apply to receive one of 35,000 travel passes.
The first application round will open on Thursday, 7 April at 12:00 (CEST) and close on Thursday, 21 April at 12:00 (CEST). The successful applicants will receive passes that will allow them to travel across Europe (predominantly using trains) for up to 30 days between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023.
Those turning 18 in the second half of the year have not been excluded from this opportunity as the EU plans to launch a second application round in October when it will make a further 35,000 travel passes available to young Europeans.
According to a press release by the European Commission, this year marks DiscoverEU’s entry in Erasmus+. In other words, it is giving young people from Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Turkey the chance to apply for travel passes for the very first time.
“DiscoverEU gives more opportunities to travel to young people than ever before. With the European Year of Youth, we celebrate youth. We owe this to an entire generation that could not travel for the last two years,” commented Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President for Promoting our European Way of Life.
In addition to receiving travel passes, the young Europeans will also be given discount cards this year. Taking this further, these cards will reportedly give them access to over 40,000 discounts on public transport, culture, accommodation, food, sports, and other services.
People with disabilities are encouraged to apply as anyone needing special assistance will receive the support they need. What is more, it is important to note that while the successful applicants will travel by train, exceptions will be made for certain individuals, such as those living on remote islands.
To apply for one of the 35,000 travel passes, visit DiscoverEU’s website.
