Le ministère de la Cohésion des territoires et des Relations avec les collectivités territoriales, le ministère de la Culture, la Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine et les partenaires financiers du programme Action Cœur de Ville – Banque des territoires, Action Logement et Anah ont lancé en décembre 2018 le programme Réinventons nos cœurs de ville. Il a pour objectif de renouveler les sites emblématiques des centres-villes de plusieurs villes en France en encourageant les projets urbains innovants. Il a récemment été annoncé que l'État soutiendrait tous les villes qui ont appliqué d'une manière ou d'une autre. La ministre Jacqueline Gourault (Ministre de la Cohésion territoriale et des Relations avec les collectivités territoires) a annoncé que les 54 villes lauréates seraient accompagnées pour lancer un appel à projets local en 2019, tandis que les 57 autres villes recevraient un soutien sur mesure pour exécuter leur projet réussi.
La participation à cet appel est considérée comme un énorme succès, car la moitié des villes du programme ont manifesté leur intérêt en demandant de l'aide. Ainsi, parmi les 111 sites proposés pour la rénovation, on peut trouver des terrains industriels non utilisés, des hôpitaux, des éléments du patrimoine. Ils auront ainsi la possibilité de recevoir des conseils d’experts et un soutien financier de 30 000 euros.
