A prestigious award won in a difficult year
The Italian town of Barolo in the province of Cuneo (Piedmont) won the “Italian City of Wine 2021” award. The recognition was awarded by the National Association of Wine Cities.
The territories of Bianco (Reggio Calabria), Duino Aurisina (Trieste), Montepulciano (Siena), Montespertoli (Florence), Taurasi (Avellino) and Tollo (Chieti) competed for the title. The towns of Duino Aurisina and Montepulciano also received a special award "for the validity of (their) cultural projects that supported the respective nominations".
The winner's programme of Barolo, which includes various events, exhibitions, seminars, art installations and much more, was developed by the Municipality in collaboration with the “Barolo & Castle Fondation”.
“Barolo & Castle Fondation” and the “Vimu-museo del vino di Barolo” are the bodies that will supervise a slew of initiatives that will be organized by local authorities and institutions. Of course, if the health situation allows it, there will also be great wine tastings on the offer.
On this occasion, the Mayor of Barolo Renata Bianco declared: “We are very happy that our effort to involve the municipality and our Region has been rewarded for it. 2020 was a very difficult year and we hope that this initiative will be a message of hope and restart”.
Wine Cities represent a network of municipalities, provinces, wine routes, parks and mountain communities that are connected to wine production. The idea is to form an ideal itinerary that crosses the Italy of historic villages, cities of art, and landscapes that have an enological and gastronomic history to tell.
