Dublin has the slowest traffic in the EU

And if you’re wondering which European city has the smoothest moving traffic then check out this article

Dublin’s inner city is the area that has the slowest traffic in the European Union. The Irish capital also has the second slowest traffic in Europe and the world overall, surpassed only by London.

The above is clear from the 2023 Traffic Index Ranking compiled by TomTom, a tech company manufacturing geolocation and navigation tools. 387 cities from 55 nations on six continents were included in the analysis.

Cities all over the world are ranked according to the average journey time, fuel prices, and CO2 emissions by the Traffic Index.

The traffic congestion situation in Dublin is so bad that it takes 29 minutes and 30 seconds to cover a distance of 10 kilometres. This is one minute longer than the results from the previous year’s ranking.

And in case you’re curious, TomTom has also managed to pinpoint the worst day to be participating in car traffic in the Irish capital. That was 19 October, when it took 36 minutes and 10 seconds to cover ten kilometres. In general, however, the best time to avoid driving were Wednesday mornings from 8:00 to 9:00 am.

Royal Irish Automobile Club chief executive, Conor Faughnan, said a lack of investment in public transport is to blame for Dublin's traffic problems.

Taranto in Italy is the least congested

Who would’ve thought but it is actually in the Deep South of Italy, where one would commonly expect the pace to be more leisurely, where we can find the European city with the least problematic and smoothest traffic conditions – Taranto.

It takes 10 minutes and 20 seconds to cover ten kilometres there. However, that indicator has also worsened by ten seconds compared to the previous year.

The good news about European cities is that when it comes to traffic in metropolitan areas overall, none of them get into the top 10 of the global ranking, though Brussels takes the 11th spot and is thus the city with the worst parameters in that aspect.
