European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas, officially opened the Capital of Innovation Awards 2019 contest on February 20. The contest was launched in Athens, the city that won the prize in 2018. All applications must be submitted by June 6. The contest is open to cities with a minimum of 100 000 inhabitants from EU Member States and countries associated to Horizon 2020.
The European Capital of Innovation Award recognizes and advances innovation in European cities. It acknowledges their achievements in connecting citizens, public sector, academia, and businesses in order to deliver societal benefits for all. The winning city will receive 1 million Euros to scale-up its innovative actions and promote them in Europe and around the world. Another 5 runners-up will be awarded 100 000 Euros each to enhance their innovation activities.
