The device prevents plastics and oils from harming sea life
Last week, the City of Cres installed a sea cleaning device that filters seawater and automatically collects floating waste. This waste, according to the Cres County Port Authority, includes plastics, microplastics, and oils, among other materials which are harmful to sea life.
Collecting approximately 1.5 kilograms of waste per day, the sea bin prevents the aforementioned materials from floating into the open sea or falling to the bottom, where they can pollute and disturb ecosystems.
Mayor of Cres Marin Gregorović discussed the device on Facebook, sharing that it is the second of its kind on the northern Adriatic and the sixth in all of Croatia. Further commenting on the need for the sea bin, he wrote: “We want to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic at sea and encourage people to care more about our environment.”
Titled Morska škovacera, the project was funded by European Fund for Maritime and Fisheries.
