The car industry in Germany warns workers that many jobs are now at risk
Last week ministers in Germany set new goals and standards for CO2 emissions that unfortunately put many jobs in the car industry at risk since these new levels are quite hard to achieve. Only in Germany, about 800,000 are directly employed in the industry which means that a lot of people are now at risk of losing their jobs. Ministers have agreed that a decrease by 35% by 2030 is the new goal, however, quite lower than the standards sets by countries sich as France or the Netherlands.
The European Union has committed to the goal of reducing harmful emissions by 40% by 2030, meaning that by that year polluting gases will be 40% less than the year 1990. This, however, is yet another milestone for the German car industry as it still suffers from the consequences that followed after "dieselgate" - a major scandal that revealed cars were deliberately made to show they exert less harmful emissions than they actually do.
