La Société nationale des chemins de fer belges (SNCB) pourrait bientôt envisager la possibilité d’introduire des trains à hydrogène, rapporte The Brussels Times. Dès l'année prochaine, la société pourrait commencer à analyser les avantages et les inconvénients de l'utilisation de trains à l'hydrogène conformément au Plan national énergie – climat adopté par le gouvernement fédéral belge vendredi.
Plan national énergie – climat 2021-2030 devrait être soumis par la Belgique à la Commission européenne avant la fin de 2019. Dans ce plan, il est demandé au pays de préciser en quoi il contribuera à l'objectif à long terme de réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre conformément à l'Accord de Paris sur le climat. Conformément à la législation européenne, le document était soumis à une évaluation populaire pendant six semaines par 60 910 personnes.
Le réseau ferroviaire est un très gros consommateur d’électricité. Il est donc tout à fait raisonnable d’envisager d’introduire des solutions alternatives. Ainsi, la possibilité d'exploiter des lignes avec des trains à hydrogène ou électriques sur de courtes distances sera évalué en 2020. En outre, Plan national énergie – climat vise à investir jusqu'à 35 milliards d'euros dans les transports ferroviaires.
L'hydrogène est un carburant à zéro émission lorsqu'il est brûlé avec de l'oxygène. Les technologies de l'hydrogène gagnent du terrain en Europe en tant que substitut plus durable aux combustibles fossiles et leur utilisation va bien au-delà du transport ferroviaire. L'hydrogène peut être utilisé dans les transports - automobiles, autobus, mais aussi à la maison.
Plus tôt cette année, la compagnie française SNCF a annoncé son intention de commander plusieurs trains à hydrogène pour ses lignes régionales, tandis que l'Allemagne a acheté des trains à hydrogène d'Alstom en septembre. En outre, cinq États allemands ont déjà adopté une stratégie relative à l'hydrogène dans le nord de l'Allemagne, qui vise à promouvoir l'utilisation de l'hydrogène dans le cadre de la transition énergétique.
