It’s time for new role models: 2022 New European Bauhaus Prizes accepts applications

The categories have been reduced without compromising the scope

The New European Bauhaus is gearing up for the second edition in its Prizes and it is now accepting applications from transformative projects and ideas happening in the European Union. The deadline for applications is 28 February 2022, at 19:00 CET.

Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, commented on the occasion: “The New European Bauhaus draws from Europe's culture, education, science and innovation to turn the promise of the European Green Deal into improvements for our daily lives. I look forward to seeing the best of European creativity come to life in this year's applications.”

Likewise, TheMayor.EU, as a partner to the initiative, is also looking forward to discovering this year’s bright examples that combine the NEB values of social inclusivity, sustainability and aesthetics.

What’s different about the Prizes this year?

As in the first edition winners and runners-up can expect monetary prizes of up to 30,000 euros and increased visibility and promotion for their projects and ideas. The two strands, for established projects and for ‘Rising Stars’ will also be kept in order to motivate both established and coming up creative people and organisations to apply.

There are, however, some differences in the 2022 format.

For one, rather than 10 categories, the projects will be awarded in 4 categories, which better reflect the thematic axes of the New European Bauhaus. These will be:

• ‘Reconnecting with nature’
• ‘Regaining a sense of belonging’
• ‘Prioritising the places and people that need it the most’
• 'Shaping a circular industrial ecosystem and supporting life-cycle thinking'

The public voting process is also different this time as only two dedicated prizes will be awarded that way. In addition, this year the public vote is not limited to the subscribers of the New European Bauhaus newsletter, and anyone interested should be able to cast their vote.

In total, this means that 18 prizes will be up for grabs.

The jury will pay even greater attention to diversity this year. Beyond the quality assessment of applications, the final stage of the evaluation process will also consider the geographical diversity, the balance between applications referring to the physical transformation of the built environment and other types of transformations as well as the diversity of contexts (rural/urban, small scale/bigger scale, etc.).

Applicants of all nationalities and backgrounds are welcome, as long as their concepts, ideas and projects are developed or physically located in the EU.
