Jelgava with plans for new wind farm

The potential construction of a new wind farm near the Latvian city is in its preliminary stages

Near the gorgeous and forward-thinking Latvian city of Jelgava, there is a bog, utilized by a local peat development company. That company’s name is SIA “Laflora” and it intends to utilize the Kaigu bog not only for the collection of peat. In the location it sees the perfect place for the construction of a brand-new wind-powered power plant.

The CEO of SIA “Laflora”, Uldis Ameriks, stated that “We manage large enough areas. And in Kaigu bog, there has been a peat extraction site for a long time. And now is the time to think about another way of using it - to recultivate this area, which is of 1,000 hectares, and to give the bog the next breath. On the one hand, it entails the cultivation of berries and forestry, but on the other hand, it could be used for wind energy”.

Currently the project is in its extremely early preliminary stages. Experts are establishing the potential reach of the power station and making risk assessments. Citizens are also being asked about their opinions on the project. According to SIA “Laflora” talks have so far been very positive and constructive, with locals demonstrating a great deal of interest in the future of the bog.
