People with learning disabilities will have the right to vote in Denmark

The will be able to give their vote in the general elections in the country

The majority of the Danish parliament have approved the initiative to give people with learning disabilities the right to vote in general elections. The official proposal is soon to be submitted. Now, people with such disabilities are obliged to have legal guardians in order to be eligible to vote. 

This means that laws and regulations regarding guardianship will have to be made easier and more supportive of everyone who wants to vote. Unfortunately, people with such disabilities cannot fully exercise their rights and the signatory of a legal guardian is always required. These people, however, can still vote in municipal, EU and regioanl elections on their own. 

About 2000 people in Denmark today have given up some of their legal capacities to guardians. Laws will be adjusted so that disabled individuals will not be required representation in general elecations. 

If the bill passes, it will become effective January 2019.
