Second edition of Paweł Adamowicz Award launched

Candidates should demonstrate love for values, such as freedom, equality and solidarity

The Mayor of Gdańsk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, gave yesterday the start of the second edition of the Paweł Adamowicz Award. Established in honour of the late mayor of the city, who died tragically during a charity event, the award comes to recognise those who stand up for the values of values freedom, equality and solidarity.

About the Paweł Adamowicz Award and how to participate

The award was set up by the European Committee of the Regions in cooperation with the International Network of Refuge Cities ICORN and the City of Gdańsk in honour of the long-serving Mayor of Gdańsk, who was murdered on 13 January 2019.

Adamowicz, who was also a member of the European Committee of the Regions, reportedly engaged with those who often go unheard, offered solidarity to those in need, and advocated for diversity which makes our societies more open and richer, the institution’s website underlines.

The Award represents a strong signal of hope for all elected representatives, officials and ordinary citizens who, despite the risks, live to make democracy work at a local level by supporting better and more open communities.

The first laureate is the Lord Mayor of Cologne, Henriette Reker: the first woman to hold this position. As the city website reports, she was awarded for her courage and determination, which she has shown over the past 20 years by promoting diversity, integration and solidarity. In 2015, the mayor of Reker experienced a cutthroat attack.

To nominate a person or an organisation for the Paweł Adamowicz Award, one needs to fill this official online form. The nominee must agree with the nomination. The deadline is on 30 September 2022.
