The goal of Earth Hour is not to save energy in one hour but to inspire millions of people across the world to live more responsibly, smartly and economically in terms of nature and environment
Starting as a symbolic lights out event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour is now the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring millions of people to take action for our planet and nature. The goal of Earth Hour is not to save energy in one hour but to inspire millions of people across the world to live more responsibly, smartly and economically in terms of nature and the environment.
Slovakia has been participating in the worldwide environmental event since 2011. The country's participation is coordinated by the WWF Slovakia, the Protection against light pollution department of the Slovak astronomical society at the Slovak academy of sciences and the Slovak astronomer’s union.
Annually, an increasing number of people join Earth Hour in Slovakia, as well as hotels, companies and schools. In 2019, dozens of companies, including 20 landmarks across Slovakia among which Bratislava Castle, the Presidential Palace, Bojnice Castle, Spiš Castle, Trenčín Castle, Nitra Castle, Stará Ľubovňa Castle, and the tower in Banská Bystrica, will all turn off their lights on this day and at this time to raise awareness of environmental protection.
Before Slovaks turn off their devices for one hour, they are invited to post at 20:29 a black picture on Facebook and Instagram with hashtags #MojaHodinaZeme (#MyEarthHour) and #Connect2Earth.
