The finals of UEFA 2024 will be held on Berlin's Olympic Stadium, which is set to go through renovations in the coming years
The city will develop a sustainability concept for the event, focusing on ecology, waste management and social inclusion
On 21 July, authorities in Berlin published their sustainability mission statement for the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship, which will be held in Germany. The Championship is set to kick off on 14 June and last until 14 July 2024 and will make use of ten stadiums in the country.
Berlin itself will host six games, including the finals that will be held in the Olympic Stadium. Johanna Small, spokeswoman for the Berlin Football and Society Network said that EURO 2024 aims to be the most sustainable European football championship of all time.
Currently, there are a lot of changes underway in European cities, many of which focus on reducing carbon emissions and restructuring the way people deal with waste and mobility. At the same time, the theme of social inclusion is much more prevalent, as more and more lawmakers consider the accessibility of cities.
These are the three areas where Berlin authorities have claimed they want to adapt and improve the city – ecology, waste management and social inclusion. According to an official statement, the goal is to use the potential of the Euro Cup in 2024 and to establish long-term, effective, sustainable structures in Berlin.
For instance, public spaces and fan areas around the city should be places where visitors can experience local sustainability practices and information. This includes a host of waste management measures that aim toward reducing and avoiding the unnecessary waste that large crowds can produce.
At the same time, the waste that they do produce should be recycled. Meanwhile, local energy will be produced from renewable sources, while the bicycle infrastructure around Berlin’s Olympic stadium will be improved.
Furthermore, the entire UEFA Euro 2024 should also be designed to be as barrier-free as possible. In addition to the renovation work that has already begun in the Olympic Stadium, authorities will also develop a comprehensive anti-discrimination concept for the events.
