Born on 20th January 1966, Peter Tschentscher has devoted a large part of his life to medicine and biology – in 1987 he began his studies on human medicine and had his postgraduate on molecular biology. He graduated in 1994 and received his doctorate in 1995. From 1994 to 2006 Tschentscher worked as a medical assistant in the fields of laboratory medicine, transfusion medicine and medical microbiology. In 2008 he was awarded habitation to the Medical Faculty of the University of Hamburg as well as a Venia Legendi as a Privatdozent on the subject of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine.
In his political career, Peter was equally successful. He has been a member of the Social-Democratic Party SPD since 1989 and has chaired its district association between 2007 and 2018. In 1999 he joined the district assembly of Hamburg North and took over leadership of the SPD group in 1999. In 2008 he ran in the provincial elections in Hamburg and became one of the three leaders of the SPD parliamentary group. In 2011 Peter Tschentscher was appointed Finance Senator of Hamburg. He presided of the post up until his election as mayor of Hamburg in 2018.
