L'écomusée sous-marin tant attendu de la Méditerranée française a finalement vu le jour. Six statues de l'artiste de renommée mondiale Jason deCaires Taylor ont été submergées sous l'eau près de l'île de Sainte Marguerite à Cannes cette semaine. Bien plus qu'une attraction touristique pour les plongeurs, l'œuvre d'art est censée jouer un rôle important dans la préservation et la restauration de la biodiversité dans la région en tant que récifs artificiels.
Initialement censé ouvrir en 2020, l’écomusée a été installé cette semaine entre les îles de Lérins, au large de la ville de Cannes. Six œuvres d'art du sculpteur sous-marin anglais de renommée mondiale Jason deCaires Taylor ont été submergées et abaissées jusqu'à ce qu'elles atteignent le fond marin et peuvent être vues par les plongeurs à 5 mètres de profondeur.
Les statues, moulées selon les visages de six Cannois, constituent un écomusée unique pour la France et la Méditerranée. Eco, car l'effort laborieux qui a été consacré à leur fabrication vise beaucoup plus qu’à attirer des touristes passionnés de plongée et de photographie sous-marine.
L’objectif est qu’avec le temps, les statues se transformeront en récifs artificiels et donneront naissance à des coraux et des petits poissons. Tout comme les récifs formés naturellement, ils favoriseront la biodiversité tout en sensibilisant le public à la question importante de la protection de la Méditerranée. Aussi, soulignent les autorités, la construction de l'écomusée a conduit à l'extension d'une zone de non-ancrage entre les îles de Lérins, où il est situé.
David Lisnard, Maire de Cannes a déclaré à l'occasion « On n’est pas dans le prêchi-prêcha, on est dans le concret : ces œuvres serviront de refuge pour la biodiversité. Il s’agit de la réunion entre la nature, notre trésor, et la culture, la spécificité de l’humain. »
Les sculptures sous-marines sont à la base du travail de Jason deCaires Taylor, qui a déjà en produit plus d'un millier. Elles peuvent être découvertes partout dans le monde, signalant les problèmes mondiaux qui affectent les biosphères sous-marines.
