Le jour férié du Fat Thursday ou Mardi Gras est un important repère de temps entre les fêtes somptueuses et la tempérance
Le mardi gras, également connu sous le nom de Fat Thursday dans le monde anglophone, est célébré par les chrétiens d'Europe et d'Amérique latine et marque le dernier jour de la saison du Carnaval. Bien qu’ils existent de différentes explications sur son origine, il se déroule toujours avec de grandes festivités, comme un tournant entre deux périodes radicalement différentes du calendrier des vacances de ces pays. Il est généralement admis que Mardi Gras termine la saison des fêtes qui commence par Épiphanie (ou Jour des Trois Rois) et est suivi immédiatement par le début d'un carême de quarante jours, à l'occasion de Pâques. En conséquence, la date change chaque année et en 2019, Mardi Gras est marqué le 5 mars.
Ce qui est spécifique à cette journée, ce n’est pas seulement sa nature festive, mais aussi la consommation excessive d’aliments riches et gras (d’où son nom), interdits pendant le prochain Carême: ainsi crêpes, confiseries sont dévorés sans culpabilité ce jour-là. Quant aux célébrations officielles, elles sont aussi splendides qu'on pourrait s'y attendre. En Belgique, le carnaval de Mardi Gras de Binche fait partie du patrimoine immatériel de l'UNESCO. Il en va de même pour les processions de porte à porte de Staré Hamry en Tchéquie, où la tradition folklorique associée s'appelle Masopust (ce qui signifie sans viande). Des célébrations remarquables sont invariablement organisées en France, en Allemagne, en Italie, aux Pays-Bas et en Suède.
Cependant, en raison de l’absence de référence réelle dans la Bible à une telle occasion de vacances, l’existence de la célébration et des tentations qui l’accompagnent ne peut être définie comme étant saine sur le plan religieux. Au contraire, le livre sacré pour les chrétiens appelle à la modestie, à la continence et à la foi.
