Lyon a réussi à préserver environ cinq millions de litres d'eau pendant un an, grâce à la collecte et au recyclage des mégots. Cette estimation, partagée par la ville elle-même, est basée sur le nombre total de mégots jetés dans les bornes de collecte EcoMégot du parc de Gerland entre juillet 2019 et juillet 2020 et l'hypothèse que chaque mégot jeté en se décomposant pollue environ 500 litres d'eau.
La société française Ecomégot, en partenariat avec la Ville de Lyon, a installé en juillet 2019 15 points de collecte de mégots sur le territoire du parc de Gerland. La période cible était de deux ans. Récemment, la ville s'est familiarisée avec les résultats à moyen terme qui sont assez prometteurs.
Pendant un an, 10 200 mégots ont été collectés au total, ce qui est une quantité non négligeable, selon Julien Bouhouf, responsable Auvergne Rhône-Alpes d'Ecomégot. Surtout du fait que cette première année le parc a été fermé aux visiteurs pendant les semaines de confinement.
Donc, il est établi que chaque mégot met 12 ans à se décomposer, contient 2 500 composés chimiques et pollue 500 litres d'eau. Cela porte à 5,1 millions de litres la quantité totale d'eau préservée par les fumeurs lyonnais.
Comme nous avons déjà dit, en France, les mégots prennent une nouvelle vie après avoir été proprement collectés. Certaines entreprises comme Ecomégot les transforment en un nouveau polymère plastique utilisé dans la création d'objets, comme le mobilier urbain, par exemple. Alternativement, les mégots de cigarettes peuvent devenir un combustible de substitution solide remplaçant ainsi les énergies fossiles.
Enfin, Lyon n'a pas l'intention de mettre fin à la lutte contre cette habitude néfaste. La ville française a déjà entouré son parc Zénith de bornes de collecte similaires et l'a transformé en un "parc sans tabac". L'expérience fait partie d’une démarche de promotion des « espaces extérieurs sans tabac » lancée en 2015.
