Rome’s metro has a new service addition to nine of its stops – parcel lockers for Amazon and InPost. The new facilities were installed with the idea of providing increased convenience for the commuters in the Italian capital so that they could combine their mobility and delivery needs in one go.
The inauguration of the lockers is part of the broader plan developed to make one of mayor Roberto Gualtieri's dreams come true, namely the "15 minutes city", a concept in which every citizen is able to reach the main services needed in daily life in the span of a quarter of an hour from their home, on foot or by bike.
Amazon Lockers are self-service collection points that offer customers of the e-commerce giant the possibility to collect their shipments in complete autonomy. Customers can select the Amazon Locker pick-up point during the purchase process - after choosing a product to purchase and confirming the contents of the shopping cart for sending their orders.
Once the order has been delivered to the selected locker, the buyer will receive a notification email with a unique code to be used for collection, the address and opening hours of the site where the locker is installed. Amazon keeps the package in the Locker for three working days, and if the collection does not take place within this time frame, the package will be returned and a full refund will be automatically made.
InPost lockers work with QR codes. For that purpose, they are equipped with scanners which users can scan with their phones to collect their items.
The city will expand the initiative in the first months of 2023 when a total of 21 pick-up points will become active, allowing for the potential of 2,700 daily deliveries.
