The Municipality of Amsterdam plans to create a flourishing night-time economy
Eleven key factors can help cities develop a flourishing night-time economy. The city of Amsterdam undertook a three-year project designed to make nightlife districts safer and welcoming to all. The initiative included reforming public spaces in the district to create a more pleasant experience for citizens, and extending nightclub opening hours to produce more staggered dispersal rather than all club-goers leaving at once. Two years later, nuisance reports have fallen 30% and reports of violence are down 25%.
The key factors according to experts are the following - Plan for growth; Support creative industries; Responsibility breeds responsibility; Save the night scene, one venue at a time; Keep it safe but alive; Improve your public spaces; Density is a crime deterrent; Time and data drive change; Piggyback on local culture; All voices matter; Participation is key to revitalization. The implementation of all these points brings together varied, global tactics into one cohesive, implementable strategy and has created an economic and cultural plan for all cities to develop their night-time economy.
