Amazon heads to Wuppertal

The German city’s location provides the perfect conditions for the construction of a new distribution centre

The online retailer Amazon has chosen the German city of Wuppertal as the location for its newest distribution centre. The concept is still in the early stages of development, but construction is supposedly scheduled to start in autumn 2020.

Contributing factors and benefits to the local community

Upon completion, the distribution centre should offer some 160 jobs to locals. That is a significantly lower number than the employees at Amazon’s logistics centres around Germany, due to the fact that distribution centres do not operate warehouses. Nonetheless, the venue should spur economic growth and provide the city and its citizens with valuable economic opportunities.

Amazon’s delivery processes are extremely tight-knit. Travel routes are optimized to the maximum extent possible, and sorting times are reduced to a minimum. Those are the reasons why Wuppertal made perfect sense as Amazon’s choice for its next large investment in Germany.

The city boasts a robust transport network. Not only is it connected to the country’s main highway and road junctures, but also allows for quick and efficient in-city travel, thanks to its vast subway network and its expanding reach.

Amazon is steadily increasing its presence in Germany, choosing to establish its logistics and distribution centres at crucial focal points throughout the country – some of the closest ones to Wuppertal are those in Dusseldorf and Bochum. Recently the company announced that it will be establishing two brand new logistics branches in Hof and Emden, thus driving the total number of Amazon’s large venues in Germany to 17.

Meanwhile, Wuppertal has also attracted the attention of other major distribution companies, namely DHL. Work is expected to begin on a new delivery base at some point in mid-2020. Upon completion, the DHL facility will employ around 70 people, further improving the city’s economic prospects.
