An old quarry in Santoña will be turned into a parking lot

This is expected to resolve long-standing problems with lack of parking spaces in the town

Finding a space to park in the Cantabrian town of Santoña is a nightmare, and especially so on weekends. Due to the town layout, the narrow streets and general lack of space, this is an issue that has been plaguing residents for a long time.

Finally, a solution project that has been in talks for some time now, seems ready to lift off after the Cantabrian Ministry of Public Works and Urban Planning gave its blessing today for the construction of a multi-level car park in what used to be a quarry – Cantera del Carmen.

Upgrading an abandoned area and providing much needed parking spaces

The collaborative project was announced after a meeting between Public Works Regional Minister José Luis Gochicoa and the Mayor and Vice-Mayor of Santoña, Sergio Abascal and Fernando Palacio.

The main idea behind the initiative is to get vehicles to park at the entry points of the town districts, so that movement within them would be easier and calmer. In other words, a project that is in line with the modern precepts of sustainable mobility.

Furthermore, this project would make use of the old Carmen quarry, which currently lays abandoned and is only used as a provisional parking lot. Being something of an eyesore, the implementation of the parking lot would also allow for a facelift of the space which will see it equipped with a vertical garden and a photovoltaic supply system.

The parking lot is planned to have space for 140 cars. The Mayor of Santoña explained that this is an ambitious project which will involve the containment of the quarry slope, but that at the same it is also an important project needs to be completed in the shortest possible time in order to relieve the residents of the town of their daily mobility troubles.
