Anzio awarded with its 15th Blue Flag award

It is the only city on the Roman coast to gain the international recognition this year

On 14 May, for the fifteenth time, the Italian city of Anzio was awarded the world-renowned Blue Flag recognition. This year, Anzio is the only city on the Roman coast to gain the coveted international award of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

The Blue Flag is awarded on a yearly basis by the Denmark-based FEE ever since its founding in 1981 as an international non-governmental and non-profit organization.

The FEE is present in more than 60 countries worldwide (in Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia and Oceania). The primary objective of the FEE programmes is the dissemination of good environmental practices.

This year, due to the Covid-19 emergency, the important national event, coordinated by the President of FEE Italia, Claudio Mazza, took place in the closed Facebook group, reserved only for municipal administrations.

"The Blue Flag, which is added to the fifth Green Flag, I dedicate it to all the operators of the sea and to all the productive categories of Anzio who, amid a thousand difficulties, are giving their soul to be able to start work again from next Monday.", declared the Mayor Candido De Angelis.

Beaches with excellent waters

The fifteenth Blue Flag of Anzio is added to its five other Green Flags which it won for its child-friendly beaches. As a significant part of the assessment, the quality of bathing water is an imperative criterion since only beaches with excellent waters are eligible to apply.

Among the criteria taken into consideration are also the purification of wastewater, the separate collection and the regulation of vehicular traffic. Environmental projects, safety, cultural offerings and services on the beach are also important.

For the Municipality of Anzio, the Blue Flag is an important incentive to do better and improve services in the area. Last week, in view of the reopening of the parks and public gardens, a series of interventions was launched for the redevelopment of the green areas of the territory by its local administration.
