Art and watermelons will take over Tarragona’s markets

This will happen as part of the traditional Sindriada preceding the Feast of Saint Magí

The Municipality of Tarragona announced earlier this week that the Sindriada (or Watermelon Festival), which precedes the traditional Feast of Saint Magí in the city, will take place on 14 August from 12 pm to 2 pm, and 6 to 8 pm in the Central Market and the Market of Torreforta. As usual, the festival will also be combined with a charitable initiative.

Saint Magí is the patron saint of Tarragona

This is the first time that the Torreforta Market will host the event, which is made possible with contributions from the Municipality. Additionally, 300 small coolers will be provided Nunhems (a branch of BASF that produces watermelon seeds of the Sandia Fashion variety).

Sindriada traditionally also includes goodwill activities. This year, everyone who buys watermelon slices (each priced at 50 cents) will automatically contribute to the Aliments amb Cor (Food with Heart) campaign by the Tarragona Red Cross. The collected funds will go towards buying fresh produce from the city markets for families in need.

Together with the tasty fruit, visitors will be able to view the work of local visual artist Tziqui Artworks. The exhibition called “Teclicatures” can be seen between 12 and 2 pm from 14 August until 12 September at the Torreforta Market, and from 14 September till 3 October at the Central Market.

"Municipal markets are the nerve centre of the city, a dynamic between centre and neighbourhoods, places which allow us to stay committed to our culture, to strengthen our link connection to all activities, to everything that happens in Tarragona," said the president of the municipal company Mercats de Tarragona, Dídac Nadal, who pointed out that “now, more than ever, municipal markets must become social and economic accelerators of the city”.
