It will offer treatment to those who wish to quit the harmful habit
The Municipality of Athens is taking steps to ensure the health and wellbeing of its citizens by opening its first smoking cessation clinic on the occasion of No Smoking Day, 31 May. With the creation and establishment of this clinic, the Greek capital will help smokers who struggle with dependence by motivating them to quit and offering treatment.
According to a press release by the municipality, the clinic will begin operating under the guidance of the Hellenic Pulmonary Society and specialised psychologists. Moreover, it will become permanently established under the supervision of the Deputy Mayor of Health and Education Manolis Kalambokas.
The main goals of the smoking cessation clinic will be to help smokers who wish to quit smoking and to persuade those who are not yet ready to do so. To achieve these goals, the clinic will offer a variety of services.
First, it will provide clients with detailed information about the harmful effects of smoking and the benefits of quitting. In addition to this, it will conduct medical examinations of cardiorespiratory function and hold personalised counselling sessions with smokers. Finally, it will monitor and support those who have already quit to ensure that they do not relapse.
On 26 May, the Hellenic Pulmonary Society and the Hellenic Cardiological Society will hold a press conference at the Sarafeio swimming pool to discuss tobacco use. Furthermore, the municipality will broadcast several informative videos for the No Smoking Day on 30 and 31 May.
The municipality seeks to prevent young people from developing harmful habits by organising an informative online session on 2 June for students and their parents. During this virtual event, key speakers will make speeches on the prevention of addictive behaviours. Speeches will include: “Smoking and adolescence, neuroanatomy of addictions”, “The formation of healthy attitudes and behaviours in adolescence” and “Breathe”.
