Belfast celebrates 4 years of its bike-sharing program

Since its inception in 2015, users have cycled more than 200,000 hours and have burned more than 1 million calories

Belfast Bikes, otherwise known as Just Eat Belfast Bikes, was started in 2015 by Belfast City Council with the assistance of the Department of Regional Development and sponsored by Coca-Cola. According to Belfast municipality, the goal of the initiative is to promote a healthier and more active lifestyle. At its launch, the scheme boasted 30 stations and 300 bikes. In the following years 16 new bike docking stations were set up and 100 new bikes were procured by the city administration.

Over 778,000 journeys have been completed by the bike-sharing initiative’s 5,500 annual subscribers. Subscription for the service costs £25 per year. You can also pay on the go for £1 or £6 for 3 days. Registering can be done via telephone, online or via the Belfast Bikes smartphone app.

In 2018 the initiative entered a partnership with the food delivery service Just Eat who are giving away bicycle saddles to all the service’s subscribers. According to the city council, the partnership with Just Eat not only raises the profile of the biking initiative but also helps grow all the local businesses that are themselves partnered with the food delivery service.
