Brussels with the largest car-free area in Europe

Brussels with the largest car-free area in Europe

All cars will be banned from the city center for a day in September 2018

Almost all streets that surround Brussels' city square have always been only pedestrian. This makes Brussels have the largest car-free zone in Europe.

In 2002, Brussels started its first "Mobility Week," which encouraged public transportation over private one. The next step is for one day in September 2018 all cars to be banned from the entire city center. The city is looking for more ways to expand its car-free zones, one of the possibility is to turn a popular four-lane boulevard into a pedestrian zone. Local authorities in Brussels already decided to ban diesel cars produced prior to 1998 starting in 2018.
