Bucharest proposes development plans for 7 billion euros

Romanian capital plans modernisation projects as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan

Last week, the Romanian capital, Bucharest submitted 7 billion euros worth of city development projects to the Ministry of European Funds. They will be part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), from which the country will receive 30 billion euros under the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Plan.

More than 50 projects

The planned projects will help the city to develop and modernise. Bucharest is planning about 50 projects in various areas of the capital's infrastructure.

Plans will include modernisation and extension of tram lines, the purchase of trams and electrification of public transport in Bucharest by transforming the current diesel buses into trolleybuses with autonomy. Another important project aims to expand cyclist tracks in the metropolitan area.

This was confirmed in a press conference by the mayor of Bucharest Nicușor Dan: “Bucharest City Hall proposed to PNRR major investment projects, which have not been made in Bucharest in the last 30 years, in key fields, such as mobility, environmental protection, health, education and social protection. It is an extraordinary opportunity for Bucharest to develop through PNRP and I hope the government will allocate substantial sums to the capital, especially since this city has a very important role in Romania's economic development.”

900 million euros for the environment

Environmental projects will receive 900 million euros making them the biggest beneficiaries. The goal is to create numerous green spaces, which unfortunately had not been arranged by the General Urban Plan even though they were part of it. The heating system will be digitalised and a new intelligent metric system will be introduced.

Other proposed projects are aimed at waste management and the creation of a Green Areas Register. In the health sector, the digitalisation of the entire public hospital network in the municipality will be the focus.

In the social field, the Capital City Hall proposes PNRR to build new nurseries and social housing, as well as to develop a social network for victims of domestic violence.
