On 5 January, the Catalonian Secretary of Public Health, Carmen Cabezas, held a press conference in order to present the plans of the regional government to boost vaccination efforts in the face of the ongoing wave caused by the Omicron variant of COVID.

She took the time to extend the call to all age groups that still haven’t received a jab to hurry up and do so as this would drastically improve their resistance to the virus. The most curious part, however, was her announcement that the Health Department has started a promotional vaccination campaign on the mobile dating app Tinder as a way to reach the 20-49-year-olds age group.

A date with the jab

The campaign consists of inserting advertising space on Tinder using youthful language and the fact that users use this platform to meet other people and schedule dates. The ads simulate a Tinder dating profile of the Covid-19 vaccine featuring messages, such as 'If we haven't seen each other yet, ask me out on a date'.

The user is then directed to click on the official government website where vaccination appointments can be easily scheduled. With this health campaign, the Catalonian Government is making its debut on this social network.

As regional statistics have shown 2% of the total cases are due to reinfections, or 28,402 for the previous week. However, 8% of cases in people under 50 are due to reinfections, a figure that only reaches 5.25% in people aged 50 and over.

Overall, groups which have received booster shots report a lower incidence of infections, which would explain why the numbers are lower for the elder people.

The Health Department also report that, so far, up to 3 reinfections have been reported in about 330 people and one person has suffered even four!
