Over the years many plans have been made regarding Deutz, but few have been this ambitious
Way back in 2007, Cologne seized the opportunity to improve the central Deutz district of the city. It’s located right on the shores of the Rhine river and the locale was in desperate need of improvement. The project included complex architecture meant to prevent flooding and features that would have made the riverbank accessible to citizens. The full concept, made by a construction firm with offices based in Berlin, was never fully realized. What has been completed so far however, has been a resounding success – 500-meter-long steps leading to the shore of the Rhine. As construction costs and time mounted, further progress on the full project was abandoned. Until now.
Very recently, the municipality has begun exploring new ways to improve the region of Deutz and more specifically the area around the river. The new plan includes upgrades to the region between Hohenzollernbrücke to Tanzbrunnen - establishment of new paths, greenery and restaurants. The most interesting part, however, is the concept of building a floating island in the river, which will serve all kinds of recreational purposes.
According to members of the city’s administration, construction cast start by 2022 and will last around 2 years. The total cost of the project is estimated at around 1 million euros.
