Copenhagen opts for caution in reopening of schools

For at least another 2 weeks, children will have to do their studies at home

The year 2021 will start with distance learning in Copenhagen and Denmark as a whole in order to combat the rising number of coronavirus infections. All primary school students must be taught from home for a preliminary two weeks, valid from Monday 4 January – a decision fully supported by the Danish capital’s local authorities.

Looking forward to better times

Copenhagen's mayor for children and young people Jesper Christensen has announced his support for the extension of the restrictions that the government adopted before Christmas to combat the corona infection.

He has stated that “After a year in the shadow of the corona, the students had to that extent deserved to return to school and start 2021 with their classmates. If some are disappointed, I understand it well. But I know that schools have a strong focus on student well-being. At the same time, both teachers and students have become proficient in digital teaching. So I am confident that with a joint effort we will get through the next few weeks.”

In the City of Copenhagen, approx. 41,500 children and young people are taught at home. The individual schools plan the students' daily lives, which the parents must keep informed about via AULA.

Students will receive digital emergency education, which means that full-time teaching is not supported. But there will be a focus on ensuring both learning and social care in the best possible way. The schools place a high value on the well-being of the class and the individual pupil, and special care will be taken of vulnerable students. They will be contacted directly and possibly asked to come to school, should the need arise.

Jesper Christensen further stated that "We are paying particular attention to the less resourceful families who may need extra support for teaching, and I would generally encourage everyone to be aware of classmates or others who need help and care."
